Welcome to the MSW student community in Michigan! You are part of 6,500 social work students across our state that are working towards their degree.
I would like to introduce myself as the MSW Representative on the NASW - Michigan Board of Directors. My role is to represent you in our organization and to best serve you to succeed in your respective program. We need you to be vocal about your concerns, questions, and praises in order to create a better organization.
I completed my BSW at Adrian College and began at the University of Michigan this fall. I recently separated from the Army National Guard after serving for 6 years. I am passionate about environmental justice issues and how they affect our clients.
NASW-Michigan has put together a key resource list for social work students, which you can find below. We hope that this information will aid you during your graduate studies and as you transition into the professional world. Additionally, please join our facebook page for Michigan social work students at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/NaswMIStudents/. This page is a collaborative page between myself, Charles Banks, Jr., the BSW Representative, and the Director of Memb er Services Duane Breijak, LMSW.
I look forward to working with you all over this next year!
Joshua Jerz, BSW

Advocacy Tools
The social work profession was founded in social change. Through the profession’s history, social workers have sought to ensure that all people have equal access to the resources and opportunities that allow them to meet their basic needs. The Public Policy Department at NASW upholds this challenge by advocating for the Association to members of Congress and regulatory agencies that so often hold the authority in their hands to influence policy.
Ethics
Review the NASW Code of Ethics and receive assistance with ethics questions from NASW-Michigan’s Ethics Committee or the Ethics Hotline.
Professional Development and Training
NASW views professional development as an essential activity for ensuring quality social work services. Professional development is a self-directed process, which requires social workers to assume responsibility for the growth of their own professional knowledge base. Regardless of career stage, social workers are ethically required to keep informed of current research, theory, and techniques that guide social work practice to better serve clients and constituents.
NASW is committed to helping social workers meet their professional development needs. This strong dedication has led to the creation of multiple professional development programs and products such as credentials, education and training courses, newsletters, employment information, resources, and publications. NASW members receive both free CEs and CEs at discounted rates to fill their licensing or credentialing requirements when they participate in our professional development programs.
