
Help shape the social work profession for students in Michigan by becoming a Student Ambassador!
The Student Ambassador Program is an NASW-Michigan initiative that identifies student leaders from each social work program in Michigan who will serve as a link between their respective program and the National Association of Social Workers. It is our
hope that through this initiative, a stronger working relationship will be created between the universities and the NASW-Michigan Chapter.
NASW-Michigan aims to have at least one Student Ambassador representing each school of social work in Michigan
Program Details
- Term: September through May
- Time commitment: 2-4 hours each month
What Does a Student Ambassador Do?
Student Ambassador role includes but is not limited to:
- Serving as a primary liaison of information between your school of social work and NASW-Michigan
- Being the voice of NASW, by distributing and promoting NASW member benefits, news, resources, advocacy efforts, and events
- Distributing NASW graduation cords to members who attend your SSW
- Participating in monthly virtual meetings with ambassadors from other schools
- Providing monthly updates on school activities and student feedback from your program
- Volunteering at a minimum of one NASW event throughout your term
- Working with your cohort or committee to plan and host one activity/project/event for social work students per semester
- Joining and participating in the Michigan Social Work Students Facebook Group and MyNASW Student Community to serve as a resource to social work students and connect with other Student Ambassadors
- Assisting in recruiting Student Ambassadors for the following year
Program Requirements
To be eligible to be a Student Ambassador, applicants must:
- Reside in Michigan
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited (or candidacy) BSW or MSW program
- Represent their school for both Fall and Spring semesters
- Be active NASW members by program start date
- If you are not currently a member but plan to join, please indicate this on your application
- Limited membership scholarship opportunities are available
- Agree to follow the NASW Code of Ethics and to the following guiding principles:
- Individuals are experts of their own experience
- Disagree with the idea and respect the individual
- The impact of what you say is more important than your intent
- Safety Over Comfort
- Use “I” Statements
- No Oppression Competition
- Everyone is a teacher and a learner
- Accountability with respect and support
