Congratulations on the start of a new academic year of working towards your BSW. You are part of 6,500 social work students across our state that are working towards their social work degree. This school year should be truly exciting for everyone.
I would like to introduce myself as the BSW Representative for the NASW - Michigan Board of Directors. My role is to represent the BSW students in our organization and advocate for the nearly 4,000 BSW students across the state. My goal is to enhance the educational experience for BSW students across the state. To insure the best service, please make your voice heard this year by expressing your needs, concerns, advocacy wishes, and suggestions you have to help improve our organization.
I am currently a senior at the University of Michigan-Flint, and I will be graduating with my BSW next May. On campus, I am the President of the Social Work Club and a board member for Phi Alpha. My area of interest is in substance abuse and I completed my substance abuse minor this summer.
NASW-Michigan has put together a key resource list for social work students, which you can find below. We hope that this information will aid you during your graduate studies and as you transition into the professional world. Additionally, please join our Facebook page for Michigan social work students at www.facebook.com/groups/NaswMIStudents. This is a great place to network, share resources, and pass along helpful articles to students from around the state.
I am looking forward to working with you and for you this school year.

Advocacy Tools
The social work profession was founded in social change. Through the profession’s history, social workers have sought to ensure that all people have equal access to the resources and opportunities that allow them to meet their basic needs. The Public Policy Department at NASW upholds this challenge by advocating for the Association to members of Congress and regulatory agencies that so often hold the authority in their hands to influence policy.
Ethics
Review the NASW Code of Ethics and receive assistance with ethics questions from NASW-Michigan’s Ethics Committee or the Ethics Hotline.
Professional Development and Training
NASW views professional development as an essential activity for ensuring quality social work services. Professional development is a self-directed process, which requires social workers to assume responsibility for the growth of their own professional knowledge base. Regardless of career stage, social workers are ethically required to keep informed of current research, theory, and techniques that guide social work practice to better serve clients and constituents.
NASW is committed to helping social workers meet their professional development needs. This strong dedication has led to the creation of multiple professional development programs and products such as credentials, education and training courses, newsletters, employment information, resources, and publications. NASW members receive both free CEs and CEs at discounted rates to fill their licensing or credentialing requirements when they participate in our professional development programs.
