A Heartfelt Message of Gratitude from your Outgoing Board President, Rae Johnson

Dear Michigan Social Work Community,

As my term as Board President comes to a close, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the meaningful relationships we've built, the communities we've strengthened, and the collaborative efforts we've undertaken over the past three years. When I assumed this role, I was inspired by the exceptional leadership of my predecessor, Fatima Salman, who set a strong foundation for NASW-MI's goals and initiatives. My hope was to continue this important work while fostering new connections across Michigan.

It has been an honor to meet so many dedicated social workers from every corner of the state, urban, rural, and everything in between, and to learn about the impactful initiatives supporting our communities. I am continually inspired by the passion and dedication of Michigan’s social work community.

Reflecting on NASW-MI’s strategic priorities, I am proud of our efforts to:

  • Enhance member engagement and benefits through effective communication via social media, email, and other channels.
  • Strengthen policy and advocacy work by ensuring members are informed of updates and equipped to take action.
  • Promote ADEI (Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives by hosting events statewide.

Most importantly, NASW-MI has remained steadfast in its commitment to supporting social workers and students throughout Michigan. Highlights include our annual conferences, both in-person and virtual, and enriching learning opportunities such as the Social Work Rising in Resilience conference, held in Saginaw. I am also proud of the dedicated committees and Board members who continue to advance our profession and share their expertise throughout the state.

I want to extend my deepest appreciation to the NASW-MI staff, both past and present, whose dedication and hard work have been vital to NASW-MI’s success.

Although my tenure is ending, my commitment to supporting social workers across Michigan remains. I look forward to staying connected and continuing the work of strengthening our profession. Please join me in welcoming Mary Mattson, who will be stepping into the role as Board President. I am confident that Mary will lead NASW-MI with passion, vision, dedication, and innovation.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve, and I look forward to what we will accomplish together in the future!

In Hope and Unity,

Rae Johnson, PhD, MSW (she/her)

Outgoing Board President, NASW-MI
