Together in Grief, Together in Healing

The social work community in Michigan is deeply saddened by the news of the shooting and fire at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones, to the injured, and to the broader faith community shaken by this senseless act.

We affirm this: grief is collective. Trauma does not stay confined to a building or a single family. Across neighborhoods, congregations, and professional networks, many will feel this loss and need care.

As the Michigan chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, we commit to standing with the Grand Blanc community in the days, weeks, and months ahead. We will:

  • Support referrals to trauma-informed care and grief counseling
  • Advocate for coordination among local service providers, faith organizations, and mental health systems
  • Promote safe spaces for community members to process, remember, and rebuild
  • Encourage public policies that reduce threat and improve access to mental health and support services

We know healing is neither linear nor uniform. Each person’s journey is unique. But we also know that kindness, listening, and connection can carry us through the darkest moments.

To the people of Grand Blanc and beyond: you are not alone. You are seen. You are supported. The Michigan social work community is here for you.

We recognize that violence and hate tragically touch many Michigan communities each year. While NASW-Michigan does not issue a statement after every incident, our commitment remains steadfast: we stand with survivors, families, and communities, and we continue to work toward a Michigan where all people can live in safety, dignity, and peace
