Policy and Advocacy Manager

Position Overview

The Policy & Advocacy Manager leads NASW-Michigan’s legislative, policy, and advocacy work under the guidance of the Chapter Executive Director. As the association’s lead lobbyist, this position is responsible for shaping and executing a proactive policy agenda that promotes the social work profession and supports social justice efforts in Michigan.

This is a full-time role with flexible scheduling needs, including occasional evenings and weekends. While primarily remote, the position requires in-person attendance in Lansing 1–2 times per month for meetings and legislative work, along with other travel throughout the state as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

  • Engage members in advocacy efforts and provide timely updates on legislative developments and Chapter priorities.

  • Build and maintain relationships with policymakers, social work educators, community leaders, coalitions, and partner organizations.

  • Communicate the Chapter’s policy positions through newsletters, action alerts, articles, testimony, and op-eds.

  • Lead or support events, trainings, and briefings related to legislative and advocacy efforts.

Policy & Advocacy Leadership

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a state policy and advocacy strategy aligned with the chapter’s mission.

  • Monitor legislation, conduct policy research, and provide analysis and recommendations on issues impacting social workers and the communities they serve.

  • Draft legislation, position statements, testimony, and other policy documents.

  • Represent NASW-Michigan at legislative hearings, coalitions, and other advocacy-focused forums.

  • Collaborate with the Chapter’s multi-client lobbyist, Legislative and Social Policy (LSP) Committee, and political action committee (MPACE).

  • Coordinate with National NASW public policy team on federal legislative priorities and PACE activity.

Organizational Support

  • Assist with strategic planning and alignment of advocacy goals with chapter-wide initiatives.

  • Support grant-funded projects and related policy initiatives.

  • Supervise interns and assist with administrative tasks related to policy work as needed.
