Happy Pride Social Workers! 🏳️‍🌈💖🏳️‍⚧️

Friday, May 30, 2025   (0 Comments)

This June and all year long, we celebrate our LGTBQIA2S+ social work community. NASW wishes all LGBTQIA2S+ social workers, advocates, and allies a happy Pride Month! We’re proud to work alongside you for a more just and more inclusive world that honors, uplifts, and celebrates our diverse and intersecting identities, as well as the stories and contributions of LGBTQIA2S+ individuals.

Michigan LGTBQIA2S+ social workers have long been the leaders in expanding civil rights and expanding access to services across our state and nationally. Today, our LGTBQIA2S+ social workers continue to develop new resources, provide critical mental health care, advocate for clients, and rally for more inclusive policies at the organizational, local, state, and federal levels.

Each summer, thousands of Michiganders from across the state joyfully celebrate all of the beautiful identities of our LGBTQ+ community. Pride events (from rallies, to parades, to picnics, to festivals) create spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals and their family and friends can bring their whole selves to celebrate, advocate and march in the streets and declare: We are here. We are visible. We are proud!

NASW-Michigan’s LGBTQ+ Social Work Committee is seeking volunteers to help us participate in and support 7 Pride events across the state starting in June. Volunteers should be available for a couple of hours during the event time and will be asked to be present at the NASW-Michigan vendor booth to hand out goodies, answer questions about social work and social work services, and to celebrate, advocate, and represent the profession proudly! All materials will be provided by NASW-Michigan.

If you are interested in volunteering, please complete this short form.

🌈 NASW-MI Joins Equality Michigan for 2025 LGBTQ+ Capitol Day

Earlier this month, several NASW-Michigan staff, board members, and student interns proudly participated in Equality Michigan’s 2025 LGBTQ+ Capitol Day—a powerful annual event that brings advocates from across the state to Lansing to speak up for LGBTQ+ rights and justice.
From legislative meetings to vibrant community-building moments, the day was a testament to the strength, passion, and resilience of Michigan’s LGBTQ+ community and allies. Attendees called on lawmakers to pass inclusive policies, protect queer and trans youth, and ensure access to affirming healthcare, housing, and education for all.

We’re incredibly grateful to Equality Michigan for leading this critical effort and for creating a space where social workers, advocates, and community members could come together in solidarity. Their leadership continues to inspire meaningful change and elevate the voices of LGBTQ+ Michiganders.

Michigan LGBTQ+ Social Work Committee

While there have been some recent wins for the LGTBQIA2S+ community in Michigan, unfortunately we have recently seen a slew of unconscionable attacks on the LGTBQIA2S+ community through dangerous policies in other states across the United States. Most recently, misinformation has fueled attacks specifically on trans youth in state legislatures across the country. We want to highlight this interactive map by the Human Rights Campaign for comprehensive care programs for gender-expansive children and adolescents. You can find additional LGBTQ+ youth resources from the Human Rights Campaign here.

NASW-Michigan is committed to organizing and advocating against these harmful attacks on our communities and working with our legislative and coalition partners to stop any efforts that may come to Michigan. If you would like to participate in these advocacy efforts, please consider joining the NASW-Michigan Michigan LGBTQ+ Social Work Committee.

New Gender Affirming Care Directory

Did you know NASW-Michigan now offers a Gender Affirming Care Directory composed of licensed Michigan therapists who offer clinical or case management services for transgender, gender non-conforming individuals, and/or their families?

All therapists listed in this directory have completed NASW-MI’s “Affirming Care Provision Across the Gender Spectrum: A Training for Mental Health Professionals” training and are actively licensed in the State of Michigan.
