Each year NASW-Michigan has the privilege of awarding one exceptional BSW and MSW student the Student Leadership in Diversity Award. These $500 scholarships recognize and promote leaders among social work students who are working on projects, research, or advocacy initiatives that promote diversity and social justice. Students should demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities (show ambition, vision and are highly motivated), have an above average academic record, and be working to promote the ideals of social work and our Code of Ethics.

On October 17th, we are excited to recognize a remarkable MSW student, scholarship recipient Ronda L. Halsey, (virtually) in front of her peers and colleagues across the state at the 2024 NASW-Michigan Legislative Education & Advocacy Day

MSW Awardee – Ronda L. Halsey, University of Michigan

Ronda L. Halsey transitioned to the University of Michigan School of Social Work from Avalon Housing, a supportive housing organization that utilizes a housing-first model. Halsey obtained her BSW from Eastern Michigan University and gained experience in the field of social work during her time at Avalon by serving in various roles including Residential Support Specialist, case management, program management and property management. She also co-facilitated Avalon's Black, Indigenous, and People of Color affinity group and gained knowledge of equitable practices through the NEW Center Champions for Change Leaders of Color Cohort in 2020. Halsey is a passionate advocate for social change and a DEI champion. As a program manager in the School of Social Work’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, she is motivated to be a catalyst and support system for students, faculty and staff to cultivate a conscious community where every person feels affirmed, respected, valued and appreciated.

Ronda is currently an MSW student in the Advanced Standing Online Part-Time Program, concentrating on Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, and Substance Use.

Ronda’s leadership, passion, academic success, and dedication to diversity on all levels made her an exemplary candidate for this award. NASW-Michigan commends Ronda’s community involvement and commitment to DEI efforts and Black Mental Health, as well as her leadership and advocacy on issues of the impacts of racism, homelessness, and systemic inequalities.

We thank Ronda for her work with Avalon Housing, the University of Michigan School of Social Work Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the several workgroups and committees she is a member of. NASW-Michigan looks forward to learning from Ronda and her experiences in the years ahead as she pursues her social work career of interpersonal practice in the areas of integrated health, mental health, and substance abuse.

It is with great honor that NASW-Michigan awards the 2024 Student Leadership in Diversity Scholarship to Ronda L. Halsey. Congratulations!
