Join NASW-Michigan in Recognizing October as

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

NASW-Michigan recognizes October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). Evolved from the “Day of Unity,” this month was first observed in 1987 - the same year a domestic violence toll-free hotline first became available. Social workers are at the forefront in recognizing and preventing domestic violence, providing advocacy and services for survivors as well as treatment for perpetrators, and urging social change around the way domestic violence is perceived and talked about. This year’s theme is Living into our Values and Cultivating Joy. Please consider joining NASW on October 24th, 2022 from 1-2pm (EST) for a timely Specialty Practice Section (SPS) Webinar: Working with Women at the Intersection of Poverty, Incarceration & Domestic Violence. This workshop responds to the strong call for social workers to provide support and services that demonstrate an underlying view of the lived experience of the women involved in the criminal justice system.

Below you can find NASW resources as well as federal and Michigan-specific resources by location. We also included links to important stories by survivors discussing their experiences with domestic violence and Ted Talks to delve into the topic deeper. Additionally, there are links to ways individuals and organizations can participate in events and a week of action aimed at ending domestic violence.

It is also important to acknowledge that domestic violence is pervasive, life-threatening behavior that affects millions across the United States regardless of age, economic status, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability, or education level. Although research suggests that female-identifying individuals are overwhelmingly the victim of domestic violence and tend to sustain more severe injuries, be mindful that there are male-identifying and non-binary individuals that also experience domestic violence. Additionally, domestic violence can be perceived as violence from an intimate partner but it is also defined by violence within families. We want to recognize the compounding negative effects that intersectionality has on victims of DV and hope that the resources provided can contribute to increasing access to resources for clients and members alike.

**Trigger Warning**

This documentary offers a survivor's perspective of domestic violence as well as addresses the common misconceptions that surround domestic violence within our society. It highlights power and control tactics that are used by perpetrators such as use of children, intimidation, and emotional abuse. Additionally, it brings to light the impact that The U.S. Criminal Justice system has on the DV population. Some parts have cursing and real audio recording and graphic photos of the victim that may be triggering to some.
