Recently the Republican led Michigan legislature partisanly passed a $2.5 billion tax cut proposal, which is now headed to Governor Whitmer's desk. The cuts being is unsustainable and would put Michigan at risk for not being able to fund strong programs that our state needs for years to come. The current state budget surplus presents a critical opportunity to invest in the long-suffering needs that affect young people and families in every community across our state. Please join NASW-Michigan and our coalition partners, including Michigan's Children, in urging Governor Whitmer to vigorously oppose any tax cuts at this time, and to prioritize tax policies such as the Earned Income Tax Credit that benefit families who shoulder the greatest challenges.
Your swift action is needed.
The tax bill passed by Republicans in Lansing would give huge tax breaks to the wealthy and hurt Michigan students, seniors, and working families.
The Republican tax legislation is fiscally irresponsible and unsustainable – creating a massive, ongoing, multi-billion-dollar budget deficit that will force deep and painful cuts to public schools, mental health access, local road repairs, and police and fire protection.
The Republican bill could also force the state to send billions of American Rescue Plan dollars back to the federal government instead of investing in Michigan in our shared priorities like education, economic development, and infrastructure.
Governor Whitmer should veto the bill because it will hurt our economy, hurt working families, and make our state less competitive.
