SBs 246 & 435 pass 97 -8! Social workers officially added to expanded student loan repayment  program!

 

March 3, 2022. Today the Senate voted 97-8 to pass two bills that enhance Michigan student loan repayment program and expand it's reach. Introduced by Senators Curt VanderWall (R-Ludington) and Mike MacDonald (R-Macomb Township), the two bills expand the essential health provider loan repayment program. SB 246 raises the maximum allowable loan repayment from $200,000 to $300,000 for providers who agree to serve in a health resource shortage area for two to 10 years. SB 435 expands the program to allow mental health professionals working in a health resource shortage area to qualify for the loan repayment program, including social workers.

 

The bills have already passed in the full House and now go to the governor’s desk for signature.

 

Key details:

  • Increases the maximum allowable loan repayment from $200,000 to $300,000, over a maximum of 10 years
  • Allows individuals to get up to $40k/year
  • Individuals must work in a DHHS-designated “resource shortage area”
  • Adds “attend a mental health professional program” to the list of eligible university program applicants 
  • Adds to the list of “designated mental health professionals” licensed masters social workers
