Hello!
My name is Chelsea Julian, and I am one of the organizers of the upcoming 10/2/21 Women’s March to Mobilize and Defend our Reproductive Rights at the Capitol Building in Lansing. As an MSW graduate from Grand Valley State University and former Public Policy Intern at NASW-Michigan, I would love to extend an invitation to Michigan social work community to attend and engage with this important event. I believe that social workers are uniquely equipped for advocacy work, and I'd love to see this profession have significant representation in this movement.
Where: Michigan Capitol Building (100 N Capitol Ave, Lansing, MI 48933)
Stop by the NASW-Michigan table for posters and stickers! When: Saturday October 2nd, 2021 Time: 12pm –4pm.
Our event will consist of a speaker series featuring prominent members of the Michigan community that are activists in the pro-choice movement (including Senator Debbie Stabenow, MSW), followed by a short march and an advocacy engagement fair. We will have many organizations present, including NASW-Michigan, to provide attendees with opportunities to volunteer, donate, and take action right then and there.
The Supreme Court will be reconvening on 10/4/21 to hear a case from Mississippi. This case has the potential to overthrow the standing Roe v. Wade decision, impacting the future of abortion rights for all Americans - especially Michiganders. Michigan has an existing 1931 law that makes performing an abortion a felony in the state. This law is still on the books, and is only inactive due to the 1973 Roe decision. If Roe goes, this law may be enforced.
As social workers, we are often on the front lines in experiencing the negative repercussions of public policy. I am sure that many of us can see the potential for harm, on multiple levels, that overthrowing Roe v. Wade presents for our clients right to self-determination. It is more important than ever that we advocate for ourselves and for the individuals and populations we serve, to promote reproductive justice and ensure our continued rights in Michigan (and beyond). Join me in demonstrating on October 2nd!
-Chelsea
