Dear Fellow Region 10 Members,

Thank you so much for electing me as your representative. I am humbled, honored, and excited to get to know all of you personally and grow our presence in the community. I look forward to learning from each of you how to best meet your needs.

I graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s of science in social work, with a dual in psychology and a minor in criminal justice. Following MSU, I went to Wayne State Law School and received my JD. While there, and following completion of my degree, I was called to get my master’s in social work. I received my master’s from the University of Michigan in 1991.

Since graduating, I have held many social work positions including in-patient child and adolescent psychiatry and hospice social work. I am also trained as a divorce and family mediator. Currently, I am in private practice seeing therapy clients and do social work ethics consultations.

In addition, I teach CEU classes for Eastern Michigan University and will be teaching for MSU this coming fall. Classes I teach include domestic abuse, subpoenas, informed consent, medical marijuana, and loss and grief when a child is diagnosed with cancer. All classes include ethics discussions. In addition, I will be teaching a 90-minute class for second year medical students at Oakland University’s medical school introducing them to social work ethics. My other passion, is building and integrative medicine program for pediatric oncology patients at Beaumont Children’s Hospital in Royal Oak.

My NASW-Michigan experience includes being a member of the Chapter Ethics Committee for approximately 13 years.  During this time, I served as the chairperson for one year. In addition, I was a member of the social work and the courts committee at the national level for approximately three years.

I am so excited to get programming off the ground and have already begun planning events for our region in September and October. The agenda for these programs will be as follows:

  • 30 minutes of meet and greet
  • 30 minutes of case discussion: 2 – 3 depending on the length of discussion for each case
  • 60 minutes learning program

Anyone wishing to help plan programming for the events for September and October, is welcome to contact me. My office number is 248-539-3850 and my e-mail address is When you call or e-mail, please identify yourself as a Region 10 member.

I also encourage you to submit cases you are willing to have discussed at these events. The cases should involve an ethical dilemma and can be in any setting, and we will utilize the Code of Ethics for these discussions.

There will be no charge for NASW members for these events. Future NASW members will be charged a $20 fee. All participants will receive CEU’s for attending.

Look for more details, some fun member perks (details are still being worked out) if you bring a non-member and they join NASW, and registration information for both the September and October programs coming soon.

Warm Regards,

Ellen Craine, JD, LMSW, ACSW, INHC
