Maria Bosnak, LMSW is running for one of two open seats on the Kalamazoo Public School Board of Trustees, which consists of seven members elected at large to six-year terms.
Bosnak, 37, received a master's degree in social work in 2014 from Western Michigan University. She also attended WMU for as an undergrad after graduating from Kalamazoo Central High School.
She is a social worker at the Kalamazoo Counseling Connection and transition specialist at the Youth Advancement Academy. Bosnak also has five children, ranging in ages 11 to 21.
Bosnak said she is running for office to give all students resources to reach their full potential. The most pressing issue for board members, she said, is to ensure the success of students who decide not to seek higher education.
"Teachers should be provided with effective training that translates to the classroom," she said. "(I want to) ensure that all stakeholders, students, KPS staff, parents and board members unite to enhance the learning experience of all students."
Bosnak said her top three priorities involve:
- Eliminating the school to prison pipeline
- Creating a climate in which all students can succeed
- Investing in evidence-based training that translates to the classroom and attends to the needs of all students
