The countries of the United Nations are scheduled to meet Sept. 25-27 for the UN Sustainable Development Summit and will vote to accept a new set of global goals. The objectives have specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years and address issues such as poverty, protecting the planet and women’s rights.
As one of the world’s top research institutions, Michigan State University boasts world-changing research expertise in a variety of areas. The collaborative nature at MSU encourages interdisciplinary work that ties together human health and well-being, economic prosperity and equality worldwide. Several expert MSU researchers are available to discuss the new sustainable development goals:
Steven Anderson is a professor and the director of the MSU School of Social Work. His research centers on factors associated with the access low-income families have to social benefits, as well as policy and program strategies that improve access to such benefits. He has evaluated the impact of welfare reforms in addition to other social welfare programs. Most recently, he has begun exploring the utility of social entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility and other market-oriented social change strategies, both in the United States and in the developing world. Anderson can speak to the UN directives of ending poverty, economic growth and opportunity, and reduced inequalities. He can be reached at 517 355-7515 or stevea@msu.edu.
