NASW-Michigan is excited to announce the launch of a five part lunchtime series of ethics workshops beginning this December. These workshops are approved for 1 Ethics CE and are FREE for NASW members ($15 for non-members). All self-care workshops will take place at the Hillsdale County ISD (310 W Bacon Street, Hillsdale, MI) from 12-1pm on the first Tuesday of each month until April of 2015. 12-1pm. Hillsdale Using the NASW Code of Ethics as a guide for social work professional conduct this lunchtime series will begin with a review of the social workers ethical obligation to engage self-care. Exploring the definition of secondary trauma will complete the hour. Participants will be encouraged to do a personal inventory of self-care activities.
January 6, 2015 Self-Care: An Ethical Obligation- Traumatizing Work.
12-1pm. Hillsdale An exploration of social work practice settings and the risk factors that lead to secondary trauma will be the topic explored in session number two in the Self-Care series. Recognizing institutional policy and practice that contributes to secondary trauma and the social workers ethical obligations will be explored.
February 3, 2015 Self-Care: An Ethical Obligation- Empathy and the Wounded Worker.
12-1pm. Hillsdale Defining empathy and its use in social work settings will be the topic of discussion for session number three in the self-care series. Understanding the ethical use of empathy with clients and when it is absent from a client encounter will be explored.
March 3, 2015 Self-Care: An Ethical Obligation- Personal Signs of Secondary Trauma.
12-1pm. Hillsdale An exploration of personal signs of burn-out will be the topic of session # 4 in the self-care series. Participants will be encouraged to make an honest appraisal of their current functioning both professionally and personally and identify areas for improvement for a return to ethical social work practice.
April 7, 2015 Self-Care: An Ethical Obligation- Developing a Plan for Ethical Social Work Practice.
12-1pm. Hillsdale Developing an individual and practice setting plan for ethical social work practice free of the symptoms of secondary trauma will be the topic for the final session in the self-care series. Participants will be encouraged to network with other social workers to identify institutional burn-out, and collaborate to enhance practice settings so ethical social work practice can flourish.
