Hornets Player Suspended Following Domestic Violence Arrest

Tuesday, September 30, 2014   (0 Comments)

NBA player Jeff Taylor has been suspended from team activities with pay, until the NBA completes their investigation.

"We take domestic violence as a very serious matter. And, that's something we don't take lightly," said Hornets' General Manager Rich Cho.

Taylor is accused of assaulting his girlfriend and a hotel employee, and for destruction of property.

This incident and other recent domestic violence cases involving big name athletes hasn't led to an influx in phone calls for local abuse shelters, but...

"I think between the recent news events and other awareness campaigns that we are doing on campus .... I do believe within the next few weeks we will be seeing an increase in calls," explained Erica Schmittdiel, the Advocacy Coordinatoor for MSU Safe Place.

MSU Safe Place has already seen more traffic to their Facebook page. People are asking about their services and for more information on the issue. And, even though it's a result of unfortunate circumstances, they're pleased with the attention to such a serious topic.

"I'm glad people are paying attention to this issue because for so long, people who have experienced domestic violence have suffered in silence and haven't known that there were resources in the community or that there were people that cared," Schmittdiel said.

The Hornets' General Manager said Taylor will continue to get paid until the investigation is complete. And, despite the setback, the Hornets aren't concerned about the season.

"It was disappointing, but we do have a lot of depth at the win position and Coach Clifford and his staff do a great job. So we're still expecting to have a good season," GM Cho said.

Taylor is due back in East Lansing for a court hearing on October 8th.

An MSU fraternity will walk a mile in heels this weekend to show support for domestic violence victims. It's just one of several community events MSU Safe Place puts on to raise awareness.
