  • How Do I Advance My Career: Tips for Social Work Job Search and Interviewing

    • In a competitive employment market, social work job seekers need to make the most of the interviewing process. The interview is your opportunity to communicate how your skills and experience meet an employer’s job requirements—and to demonstrate how your personality fits with the organization. Careful consideration of the steps leading up to, during and after an interview will help you project yourself in the best possible light to a potential employer—and improve the odds that you will secure the job you seek. This March 2019 Lunch and Learn webinar with Michelle Woods, MSW Student Career Services Director at the University of Michigan School of Social Work, will give social workers better tools for job searching in 2019 as well as explore best practices in interviewing.

NASW-Michigan's Professional Development Booklet (updated 2019)

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), social work is the fastest growing careers in the United States. The profession is expected to grow by 19% between 2012 and 2022. Professional social workers are found in every facet of community life—in schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, senior centers, elected office, private practices, prisons, military, corporations, and in numerous public and private agencies that serve individuals and families in need. Many also serve as social and community service directors.

This Michigan Social Work Professional Development Booklet aims to help social workers (specifically new professionals) navigate an ever-changing workplace and equip them with the professional tools they may need to secure employment.
