Substance Use Disorders Amongst Older Adults: Risk Factors, Prevention and Treatment
Thursday, March 24th, 2022 1 pm – 4 pm. 3 CEs (Free for Medicaid providers) Using the ASAM Criteria as the foundation of efforts to improve treatment for Substance Use Disorder amongst the aging population, at the end of this training, Social Workers will be able to;
- Understand acute intoxication and withdrawal potential amongst the aging population.
- Explore & assess the biomedical conditions and complications faced by the aging population with substance use disorder.
- Assess emotional, behavioral, or cognitive conditions and complications.
- Understand and assess the stages of change.
- Assess relapse, continued use, or continued problem potential amongst the aging population.
- Assess how environmental factors such as living arrangements and social support systems impact recovery.
In addition to the six dimensions of the ASAM criteria, this training will also include a wellness piece that will educate and provide social work practitioners with the tools to practice healthy habits on a regular basis to attain better health and wellbeing. This webinar will be held on Zoom, with captioning on. All registrants will be emailed course materials and log in information two days prior to the event. Presenter: Charles Coleman, LMSW-Clinical is a 2018 Master of Social Work graduate of the University of Michigan. His interpersonal practice specialty area for his MSW was in Aging in Families and Society. Since receiving his MSW, Charles is an employee at Huron Valley Pace as a Medical Social worker. Huron Valley PACE® provides an alternative to nursing home care for participants – allowing seniors to remain independent in their own homes and communities. Charles identifies as a person in long-term recovery since 1998. In 2001, Charles volunteered as a transitional house manager with Dawn Farm’s Chapin Street project. Later and for several years as the Coordinator of Dawn Farm’s transitional housing program and the community liaison for Dawn Farm’s street outreach program. Charles has been involved with many community initiatives and functions, including currently serving as a member of the Washtenaw County Substance Advisory Council, a Regional Board Member of the Community Mental Health Partnership Southeast Michigan, and a council member of the Church of the Good Shepard in Ann Arbor. He has also previously served as a member of the Mayor Task Force to End Homelessness in Washtenaw County, a member of the Continuum of Care Board, a member of the University of Michigan A2C3 advisory committee facilitator the Men of Color Motivational Group. And a Deacon of the Full Truth Fellowship Church. Fees: Social work practitioners who accept clients on Medicaid: FREE for the first 30 registrants (you will be asked for your provider number during registration) (PLEASE NOTE THAT WE HAVE HIT THE 30 FREE REGISTRATION SPOTS FOR THIS COURSE)- Other social work/mental health practitioners: $30 for NASW members, $45 for Non-Members
