This final event in NASW-Michigan’s museum learning series will take place at the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia, whose aim is to use objects of intolerance to teach tolerance and promote social justice. Following an introductory talk and 25 minute video, there will be a guided tour of the museum’s exhibits.
The Museum features six exhibit areas -- Who and What is Jim Crow, Jim Crow Violence, Jim Crow and Anti-Black Imagery, Battling Jim Crow Imagery, Attacking Jim Crow Segregation, and Beyond Jim Crow.
The Museum also offers a comprehensive timeline of the African American experience in the United States. The timeline is divided into six sections: Africa Before Slavery, Slavery in America, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, Civil Rights and Post Civil Rights. The Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University strives to become a leader in social activism and in the discussion of race and race relations.
Learning Objectives:
- Explore the history of Jim Crow as a system meant to sustain racial hierarchy
- Understand the continuing legacy of Jim Crow in the present day
- Explore cultural diversity issues as they relate to communities affected by Jim Crow
Free for students, $20 for NASW members, $30 for non-members.
2 CEs will be available for this program. NASW-Michigan is an approved provider through the Michigan Continuing Education Collaborative.
