Yoga informed social work is an emerging field of study that adds another dimension to traditional social work practice by bringing the mind-body-spirit connection into the clinical experience. Yoga informed social work draws upon neuroscience research and the Eastern tradition of Hatha Yoga. This Region 8 workshop will explore the benefits of yoga and it's potential benefits for clients.

Some benefits may include:

  • Trauma survivors can also benefit from yoga informed social work with modifications to traditional yoga practices.
  • Certain pain suffers can benefit from understanding the intersection of physical pain and emotional pain
  • The meditative aspects of Yoga can assist in tamping down pain sensations.
  • Yoga addresses the needs of social workers for physical and emotional self-care.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the intersection between physical and emotional pain.
  • Participants will understand how Yoga breath practices elicit the Relaxation Response.
  • Participants will understand how Trauma Sensitive Yoga differs from traditional Hatha Yoga.

Presenter: Ruth Moss-Katsnelson, LMSW, ACSW, RYT 200. Ruth is a social worker with 33 years of experience who is researching the healing aspects of using Mind-Body-Spirit practices.
