The United States is gripped by an opioid and heroin addiction crisis. The social work profession will play a valuable and key role in our nation’s efforts to address this issue. This Region 8 workshop will provide an overview of opioid addiction, how clients move from seeking pain relief to addiction, and the impact on clients' lives, their families and their ability to function in society. We will also explore how to identify & treat opioid addiction and the challenges in doing so.


Learning Objectives:

  1. Advance knowledge of opioids and addiction.
  2. Improve knowledge about the opioid epidemic.
  3. Learn how to identify clients with opioid addiction.

The workshop is free for NASW members, $25 for non-members. RSVP required to Abby Segal, LMSW at


2 social work pain management CEs will be provided for licensed social workers.


Presenter: Lisa Kaplan, LMSW, CAADC, CPC-R, ACSW graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Social Work. She has been in the addiction field for 24 years, having worked at CARE of Southeastern Michigan as a clinician and as a program coordinator in the Prevention Department. She currently runs the Community Education Department and serves as part of the clinical treatment team at Henry Ford Health System’s Maplegrove Center in West Bloomfield. Lisa also coordinates an elementary school substance abuse education program in the West Bloomfield School District called Kids in Charge.
