NASW-Michigan's Physical and Sexual Violence and Women's Issues (PSVWI) work group is happy to present a special workshop at their January meeting on the intersection of firearms and homicide. The evidence regarding whether specific state firearm laws are associated with reductions in homicide, including domestic violence homicides, will be discussed. Areas of firearm laws to be covered include 1) the disqualification of high-risk individuals from firearm purchase and possession; 2) systems to prevent firearm purchase by those disqualified; and 3) relinquishment of firearms already possessed by those disqualified. Michigan’s firearm laws will be discussed in light of the evidence.

  1. Identify which high-risk groups are prohibited from firearm purchase and possession under Michigan law.
  2. Describe how specific firearm laws may work to reduce homicide.
  3. Compare evidence-based firearm laws with the laws in place in Michigan.

April M. Zeoli, PhD, MPH. Dr. Zeoli conducts interdisciplinary research, with a goal of bringing together the fields of public health and criminology and criminal justice. Her main field of investigation is the association of firearm policy with homicide.

This event is worth one continuing education credit (1 CE)! Please arrive by 10:30am, as there will be a 30 minute business meeting before the scheduled workshop.

This CE is free for members, and $15 for non-members.
