DETROIT – Today, the Michigan Nurses Association (MNA), the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and State Representative Stephanie Chang held a gratitude breakfast to honor and thank nurses, social workers, and other caring professionals who provide crucial public health services.

"Social workers and nurses, along with other health professionals have to come together to enhance the quality of care in our communities for many generations. With a current emphasis on improving access to care and addressing social justice issues that influence the wellness and functioning of residents residing in District 6, it is honor for NASW-Michigan to thank each contribution that nurses and social workers make on a daily basis,” said Abigail Eiler, LMSW, president of NASW-Michigan. “We look forward to the continued support and partnerships with the Michigan Nurses Association and Rep. Chang. We are a stronger force when we work together."

The event included the presentation of a giant thank-you card for their commitment to services to the nurses and social workers in attendance.

“Nurses and social workers are there for residents in District 6 and all our communities in the most challenging of times, and hardly ever get recognition for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to service,” said Stephanie Chang, State Representative (D-Detroit). “I am excited we were able to host this gratitude breakfast to honor two of our most valuable and important caring professions.”

"The Michigan Nurses Association is pleased to partner with Rep. Chang to shine a spotlight on the vital contributions that nurses and social workers quietly make in our communities every day," said John Armelagos, RN, president of the Michigan Nurses Association, which represents registered nurses throughout the state. "Our jobs can be very challenging at times, but nurses never stop advocating for our patients and we appreciate Rep. Chang advocating for us."

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event went to the Mary Turner Center for Advocacy. The Mary Turner Center for Advocacy serves residents from the Detroit, River Rouge, and Ecorse communities through connecting residents and families with resources and services, programming and organizing initiatives that address neighborhood problems, and convening town halls to discuss issues relevant to the local community.
