TIME FOR ACTION ‪#‎BlackLivesMatter‬

Once again the injustice of the "justice" system rears it's ugly head. Once again we are left shaking our heads in disbelief wondering what can be done about the senseless deaths of men and women of color at the hands of police. There are so many questions but so few answers. We are only left, often, to conclude that implicit bias and racism plays a significant role in what takes place. This isn't a new thing, only new in the sense that we now see it on video all over the news and social media when it happens.

There are certainly policy implications here and a need for the nation in it's entirety to take a close examination of self to better understand racism, the history that created it, and how to end it. There are needs for local law enforcement to examine use of force policies and to better train and equip officers to understand and deal with implicit bias. We require better connection with citizens through community policing and relationships rather than fear and intimidation. There are many good examples out there often sullied by these tragic events.

In the meantime people are hurting, people want action. While NASW-Michigan certainly will continue supporting long-term action, we also want to look into what can be done immediately.

We are here to listen to your ideas.

There are likely many individuals out there who could use someone to talk to right now. There are likely many people out there that could provide a good listening ear right now as well. There are also many people who want to organize events, protests, vigils, or conversations and NASW-Michigan wants to provide at least one small space here where we can communicate with one another.

So, if you are looking to organize something, want to provide a helping hand or open ear, want someone to talk to, or share a resource, please post a message on the NASW-Michigan Facebook page in the comments. Be sure to include what area you are from. If you have an event already planned, let us know that too and we will create a separate post to help you get the word out.

Think of this as a message board. Please keep things respectful and think about what you post before you post it. #BlackLivesMatter
