This first event in NASW-Michigan’s museum learning series will explore the history of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan. Following a guided tour of the museum, Shannon Martin, Director of Ziibiwing Center, will present a workshop on tribal history, boarding school era, and cultural diversity.

This first event in NASW-Michigan’s museum learning series will explore the history of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan. Following a guided tour of the museum, Shannon Martin, Director of Ziibiwing Center, will present a workshop on tribal history, boarding school era, and cultural diversity.

 

The permanent, educational, sacred, and ceremonial collections of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, managed by the Ziibiwing Center are a bridge through time where the past meets the present. Centuries old artifacts come to life and educate the tribal community and others about the social and artistic expression of our ancestors. Contemporary objects revitalize the traditions and teachings of our elders.

 

Learning Objectives:

1. Explore the history of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan

2. Understand boarding schools and their impact on current generations

3. Explore culture diversity issues as they relate to tribal communities and how social workers can practice with cultural humility

 

2 CEs will be available for licensed social workers. $15 for students, $20 for NASW members, $30 for non-members.Registration cost includes admission into the museum.

 

Space is extremely limited.

 

Museum tour will start at 1pm, so please arrive by 12:45pm to get checked in.
